Early in 1905, a man named Paul P. Harris, who had moved to the big city of Chicago from a small town, started a little club of four men. They didn't have a clubhouse, but instead met in each others' offices, "rotating" to a different office each week.
Within 20 years, Rotary had grown to 200 clubs with more than 20,000 members, on six continents. Its mission expanded beyond serving club members' professional and social interests. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self.
Today, Rotary International includes 1.2 million men and women, in 34,000 local Rotary clubs, in more than 200 countries.
The Rotary Club of Atascadero
The Atascadero Club was started in 1950, and is Rotary Club #7432. We currently have over 60 members, and we meet for lunch on Wednesdays. We sponsor the Interact leadership club at Atascadero High School, and we are involved in a host of service projects. The "Rotary year" runs from July 1 to June 30, and we elect a new president for each year. Here's a link to the Club's website.
